This course is designed for students who have completed at least two years of college-level Italian or who have achieved equivalent competency through study in Italy. Our primary objective is to enhance students' speaking abilities and Italian cultural literacy through exposure to a variety of Italian texts and contexts. The course will be organized both thematically and chronologically. Some groups or themes that might organize the course include the following groupings: l'amore, la morte, e l'altro; la città , la campagna, i sogni; il passato, il presente, e il futuro. We examine these themes in literary texts, paying attention to the different genres, and in opera and film. Students are expected to participate actively in this seminar setting. Class is conducted entirely in Italian. |

Essential Capabilities:
Intercultural Literacy, Speaking
Students explore intercultural literacy by way of examination of various cultural texts (narrative, artistic, cinematic, poetic) that engage key questions of Italian society.
Students will speak daily and in a variety of formats: class discussion, presentations, interviews, etc.

Susanna Nocchi, Grammatica pratica della lingua italiana, or another grammar resource appropriate for an advanced level. This excludes a first year language text.

Examinations and Assignments:
1. Weekly essays that increase in length. The essay will be graded for both grammar and content or complexity.
2. Weekly incontri with the Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) at a time to be determined during the first week of class. Typically these incontri meet either Tue or Thur evenings.
3. The Italian caffe' is not mandatory, but it is strongly recommended, especially for students who will spend their spring semester in Bologna. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments:
Please note: this course is intended for students who have either completed ITAL112 or placed beyond it. It is not designed for students who have already studied in Italy, though some exceptions will be made. Contact the instructor in the event of questions concerning the appropriateness of enrollment.
Students who have completed the equivalent of ITAL112 in any program or institution other than the ECCO Program in Bologna should take the placement exam. Results are valid only in the semester in which the exam is taken.
Students will be expected to participate actively in class. They will also be expected to attend various extra sessions (screenings, incontri, conversation hours) that are designed to maximize their exposure to spoken Italian.
Italian 221 students will be required to attend CINQUANTA, performed by Dewey Dell, the Italian theater company in residence at the beginning of the semester, on Friday, Sept. 16 at 8 pm in the CFA Theater. Tickets are available online at http://purchase.tickets.com/buy/TicketPurchase?orgid=24317 or at the box office. Students are invited to attend the company's performance of A ELLE VIDE, on Friday, Sept. 9 or Saturday, Sept. 10 at 8 pm in the Patricelli Theater.
Students will also conduct interviews with company members in Italian during the weekend of Sept. 10-11; students' write-ups of these interviews will appear on the CFA blog. |
