An introduction to the reading of classical Latin prose, the course will include a review of Latin grammar and syntax. Students will read selections from Cicero's rhetorically most perfect speech, the PRO MILONE, in which he defends the faction leader Milo on the charge of murdering Cicero's sworn enemy, Clodius. The course will begin slowly, with the aim of gradually acclimatizing students to the rhythms and stylistic and syntactical patterns of Ciceronian oratory. The emphasis will be on understanding and translating the Latin, but we will consider Cicero's strategies of persuasion in the light of a contemporary handbook of rhetoric (read in English). |

Examinations and Assignments:
Preparation of daily assignments in Latin; one short exam early in the semester, a mid-term and a final (the last two evenly weighted); two short papers (approximately three to five pages) on topics to be assigned. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments:
This course is intended for students who have had one year of college Latin or the equivalent (normally three to four years of high school Latin--in doubtful cases consult the instructor). Regular class attendance is required. |
