Introduction to Latin literature of late antiquity and the Middle Ages. In the course we will read selections from a variety of texts from the third to the 12th century: historical works, biographies, martyrdom accounts and saints' lives, dramas, letters, and lyrics of love, praise, humor, and satire. Topics discussed will include the development of the Latin language; figural and allegorical interpretation; medieval biography, hagiography, and historiography; the representation of the individual; and the theme of love in the Latin literature of the Middle Ages. |

Examinations and Assignments: One take-home exam, one short paper, and one long paper, plus in-class discussion and reports. About 5 pages of Latin to prepare each week, and reading in secondary texts. Students will write a final paper on a medieval Latin text of their choosing, preferably one not studied in class, and will give an oral report on their chosen text in one of the last class periods. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments: Students should normally have taken a 200 level Latin course or the equivalent. In doubtful cases consult the instructor. Regular attendance is expected. |
