Introduction to Latin literature of late antiquity and the Middle Ages. In the course we will read selections from a variety of texts from the third to the 12th century: historical works, biographies, martyrdom accounts and saints' lives, dramas, letters, and lyrics of love, praise, humor, and satire. Topics discussed will include the development of the Latin language; figural and allegorical interpretation; medieval biography, hagiography, and historiography; the representation of the individual; and the theme of love in the Latin literature of the Middle Ages.
