Introductory Calculus

This course is designed to introduce basic ideas and techniques of differential calculus. Students should enter with sound precalculus skills but with very limited or no prior study of calculus. Topics to be considered include differential calculus of algebraic, exponential, and logarithmic functions. (Integral calculus will be introduced in MATH118.) |

Frequent assignments, weekly projects, at least two exams and a cumulative final examination. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments:
Use of a graphing calculator, TI-83 or later, is required. A combination of lecture/presentation and work in small groups. All small groups will meet Mondays 12:00-1:00pm and attendance is required. The format is non-traditional, with group work and frequent use of technology. Regular attendance and participation is required. Students may not get credit for both MATH117 and MATH121 and are encouraged to seek departmental advice about which course to take. Any student with prior study of calculus (but wishing to begin again) should take 121, not 117. |
