MATH121 is designed for students who have completed a high school calculus course and who might pursue study in an area for which calculus is an essential tool but who are not prepared to place out of calculus. This course is a deeper and broader study of calculus than MATH117; theoretical aspects are not the main focus but will not be avoided. The course will, together with MATH122, treat limits, derivatives, and integrals; the calculus of exponential, logarithmic, trigonometric, and inverse trigonometric functions; techniques of integration; plane analytic geometry; various applications of calculus; sequences and series, including power series and intervals of convergence. |
Essential Capabilities:
Logical Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning This course will train students in classical quantitative techniques and develop their ability to logically reason through mathematical proofs.

Additional Requirements and/or Comments: Students who have successfully completed a high school calculus course of approximately one year should choose among MATH121, MATH122, MATH221, MATH222, and MATH223. An AP score of 4 or better should indicate a preference for one of the 200 level courses. Recommended preparation is high school mathematics through a semester of calculus. Students who have not studied calculus previously should enroll in MATH117. Students may not get credit for both MATH117 and MATH121 and are encouraged to seek departmental advice about which course to take. |
