The topic for MATH 515 in Fall 2015 will be dynamical systems and Diophantine approximation. Diophantine approximation is a branch of number theory in which we quantify how closely we can approximate irrational numbers by rational numbers. It is a classical field, and many old and new results can be understood through basic real analysis. On the other hand, some of the most exciting recent developments in Diophantine approximation follow from its connections to dynamics on homogeneous spaces. In this course, we will explore Diophantine approximation from both points of view--the classical and the dynamical. |
