MATH 525
Fall 2012
| Section:
01
|
This course may be repeated for credit. |
This course will be an introduction to Lie groups. A Lie group is one that is also a differentiable manifold so that the two structures are compatible. The necessary concepts from differential geometry and group theory, as well as the formal definition of a Lie group and first examples, will be presented in the first week. For the remainder of the course, the main objects of study will be the classical Lie groups, which can all be represented as groups of invertible matrices over the real numbers. The class will conclude with a few surveys on the relationship of Lie groups to other branches of mathematics. |
