This introductory course in theory and practice prepares students for further work in music history, theory, composition, ethnomusicology, and performance. The goals of the course are to develop a thorough working knowledge of basic musical structures, including scales and modes, keys, intervals, motives, chords, rhythmic patterns, and types of musical motion; to experiment with musical materials and design through exercises in improvisation and composition; to learn to transcribe tunes and harmonize them; to gain basic keyboard and sight-singing skills, or to improve on these skills; and to recognize and interpret musical structures in a variety of repertoires including classical, folk, rock, jazz, and world music traditions. |

Examinations and Assignments: Attendance mandatory. There will be weekly homework assignments, quizzes, a midterm and final examination. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments: Students are required to attend a weekly one-hour skills section; time to be arranged. Students with an AP Music Theory score of 4 or 5 may place out of Music 103. These students should consult with the instructors regarding placement in 201 or 202. Students with other theory background may take a placement test, available from the instructor at the beginning of the year. All applicants for admission to the music major are required to have passed this course at the time of application. Students considering the music major should take it at the earliest possible time. |
