Topic/Course Title: The Material Culture and Technologies of Music
This seminar concerns the material culture and technologies of musical production, dissemination, circulation, consumption, and perception. This course explores the diverse ways that musical sounds, practices, and meanings inform and are informed by the relationships among performers, listeners, musical materials and technologies, and their materiality. Drawing on literature and case studies from musicology, ethnomusicology, popular music studies, and sound studies we will examine how scholars have studied different types of musical objects as a means of understanding, not only the objects themselves, but also music, musicians, music cultures, and more. |
