Topic: Beyond Messiah, Handel's Other Oratorios and Operas. An immersion in Handel.
Throughout his career his ability as an organ and harpsichord interpreter and improviser was the basis for his fame which preceded his renown as a composer. Following early study in his native Halle, Handel spent formative years in Italy, where his orchestral style was influenced by the dominant models (Vivaldi and A. Scarlatti), while his solo vocal style is drawn from the coloratura and other talents of the diva castrati. From Italy, he moved to England, where for two decades with Opera sung in Italian he developed as a composer and presenter, becoming a national figure. He returned to Oratorio and produced his masterwork Messiah that dominates discussion of the genre. Intensive study of Handel's other works within the large body of his choral and vocal music will bring their place in our common cultural history into focus, beyond the isolated iconic masterwork, developing a sense of the composer's contributions to art-forms that crossed national, linguistic, cultural, and gender boundaries. |
