Additional Requirements and/or Comments: Seminar Topic: "Boundary Crossing in Indian Music"
Students will be introduced to the core aspects such as raga and tala of India's two classical traditions in a broad perspective. The current practices of many varieties of Indian music are very much connected to one another. Thus, this course will be focused on the interrelated characteristics within the classical, popular, folk and devotional music cultures. |

Additional Requirements and/or Comments: Books and essays in the autobiography and biography format provide valuable information and perspective about the processes of humanly organized sound. This course will survey the lives and works of numerous composer/ performers of the African American music tradition referred to as jazz. The focus time period will be from 1910 through 1980. Artists will include Joplin, Morton, Henderson, Ellington, Armstrong , Hampton, Gllespie, Parker, Monk, Davis Coltrane, Mingus, McLean, Shorter, Hancock, and others. This course is structured as a music major seminar, but interested non-music majors are welcome. |
