Additional Requirements and/or Comments: Topic: Art, Popular, and Traditional Music of Africa
One of the assets of Africa¿s music scene is its vast plurality. Traditional music forms, conceived, developed, and performed in Africa over many centuries, coexist and interact with recent developments. From the Congolese rumba to West African highlife, hip-hop, azonto, classical, and gospel, to mention a few, the daily soundscape is saturated with a wide array of musics, and inter- and intracontinental musical influences flourish. Through extensive readings, classroom discussions, listening and viewing, and practical performances, this course will examine in detailed some selected musical traditions linked, geographically and historically, to various areas of Africa. The central topics will include structure and style, interconnection of traditional, popular, and art music forms, intra-and international circulation of African music, and music¿s role in shaping African identities in contemporary times.
