Topic: Musical Geographies of Central Asia For centuries, Central Asia has served as a crossroads of civilizations and cultures, connecting East and West while being contested by various political powers. Its modern history ¿ from imperial and Soviet domination to the rise of independent nation-states ¿ has witnessed a profound transformation in the region¿s political geography, highlighting the complexities of its geocultural demarcations. How have music and sound responded to changes in the delineation of Central Asia¿s geopolitical space? How do borderland communities negotiate their senses of territorial belonging in music amidst a confluence of ethno-nationalism and transnational as well as global cultural trends? What can the continuity or differences in musical expression across borders reveal about the region¿s sociocultural history and the interplay of ethnic and national identities in the twenty-first century? This seminar will address these questions by examining a variety of musical practices from former Soviet Central Asia, Mongolia, northwestern China, and Afghanistan. It will explore the soundscapes of the region through the lens of historical interactions between nomadic and sedentary societies, Turkic-Mongolian and Iranian cultures, and Islam and pre-Islamic beliefs. It will also investigate the intersections of indigenous musical traditions with colonialism, nationalism, and globalization. Students will be introduced to interdisciplinary literature on the musical construction of place and borders, gaining insights into the role of music in cultural narratives of belonging and identity. |

Topic: Jazz and Hip-Hop: The Art of Thrifting The concept of repurposing is built into the creative process. This course will examine the idea of repurposing within the musical cultures of jazz and hip-hop. Students will examine the ways this idea has evolved beyond the music to form everything from social perspectives to fashion trends and beyond. This course will function as a subculture where everyone is bringing something to the table, so students will contribute materials to aid in classroom discussion. |
