Course Cluster: African Studies

This one-semester course in the musical traditions of Mande (Maninka and Mandinka) peoples of western Africa consists of three separate ensembles: JEMBE and DUNDUN drums, BALAFONS (xylophones), and guitars. KORA (harp) will be taught on a limited basis. Students will also learn about the culture in which the music lives through readings, recordings, and video viewings. Audition and permission of instructor are required at the first class. The ensemble will present public performances.

Essential Capabilities: Designing, Creating, and Realizing, Intercultural Literacy
Designing, creating, and realizing: The course teaches students primarily to perform, but also to discuss and analyze this specific music. Emphasis will be on the original design and presentation of certain genres and styles. A concert at the end of the semester will be part of the assignments.

Intercultural Literacy: By studying music from different nationality, ethnic group, or historical period, students will gain knowledge of cross-cultural encounter; hence promoting a comparative reflection.
