Students may learn mridangam, the barrel-shaped drum; kanjira, the frame drum; or konakkol, spoken rhythm. All are used in the performance of classical South Indian music and dance. Beginning students will learn the fundamentals of technique and will study the formation of phrases with stroke combinations. Advanced classes will be a continuation of lessons in a variety of talas. Individual classes supplemented by a weekly group section. |
Essential Capabilities:
Intercultural Literacy Students are taught South Indian percussion by listening rather than by reading music.

Compositions and/or exercises are presented orally or in notation. Through practice, students master the assignments from one lesson to the next.

Examinations and Assignments: Daily practice of lessons, memorization of technical exercises and rhythmic compositions. In class final exam will test performance skills. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments: Prerequisites: MUSC212 AND MUSC110 Strict attendance is compulsory. Admission by interview. Preference will be given to continuing students, then to music department graduate students and music majors, particularly those specializing in percussion. Undergraduates may take this course up to two times for a letter grade and up to four times for credit towards graduation.
