Instruction in the performance of orchestral music of Central Java. Various levels of difficulty are represented in the playing techniques of different instruments, mainly tuned gongs and metallophones. Previous formal music instruction is not necessary. Students should not preregister for this course. Interested students should attend the first class for audition and interview. |
Essential Capabilities:
Designing, Creating, and Realizing, Intercultural Literacy Designing, creating, and realizing: The course teaches students primarily to perform, but also to discuss and analyze this specific music. Emphasis will be on the original design and presentation of certain genres and styles. A concert at the end of the semester will be part of the assignments.
Intercultural Literacy: By studying music from different nationality, ethnic group, or historical period, students will gain knowledge of cross-cultural encounter; hence promoting a comparative reflection.
