Advanced-level performance of Central Javanese gamelan. Emphasis on the music of wayang (shadow puppet performance) and dance. Students may arrange to take private instruction in several instruments, such as rebab, kendhang, gender, and, also, Javanese singing. |
Essential Capabilities:
Designing, Creating, and Realizing, Interpretation Designing, creating, and realizing: The course teaches students primarily to perform, but also to discuss and analyze this specific music. Emphasis will be on the original design and presentation of certain genres and styles. A concert at the end of the semester will be part of the assignments.
Intercultural Literacy: By studying music from different nationality, ethnic group, or historical period, students will gain knowledge of cross-cultural encounter; hence promoting a comparative reflection.
