This course is a study of recent attempts by philosophers to explain the nature of language and its use in speech and thought. Philosophers studied may include some of the following: Frege, Russell, Austin, Strawson, Searle, Donnellan, Kripke, Quine, and Davidson. |

The level of this course is fairly advanced so previous exposure to basic methods of philosophical arguments and to the elements of logic is necssary. Only under exceptional circumstances will students who do not have the prerequisites be allowed to take the course. |
