PHYS 113
Fall 2010
| Section:
01
|
This course is the first term of a general physics course with calculus. The focus is on Newtonian dynamics and its ramifications for mechanics and heat. This course seeks to develop both conceptual understanding and the ability to use this understanding to obtain precise, quantitative predictions of how the universe works. The associated lab PHYS123 is recommended. |
Essential Capabilities:
Quantitative Reasoning This course demands extensive use of mathematical descriptions of mechanical systems.

Examinations and Assignments: Two hour exams and a final exam. Weekly problem sets. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments: A semester of calculus (in secondary school or college) is a prerequisite. Problem solving help sessions, run by undergraduate TAs, are provided weekly. The associated laboratory course, PHYS121, provides first hand experience that is important in mastering the concepts. Simultaneous registration in the laboratory course is not required but is highly recommended. Students planning to enter the health professions should be aware that a year of physics with laboratory is usually required for admission. Consult your major adviser if you are in doubt about similar requirements in your field. |
