This course offers a broad introduction to scientific theory and research in the study of human mental processes. Topics include perception, attention, memory, thinking, and language. The course draws on both behavioral and cognitive neuroscience approaches and emphasizes the relationship between mind and brain. Class activities include lectures, short discussions, and demonstrations. |
Essential Capabilities:
Logical Reasoning The essence of the scientific method involves use of both deductive and inductive reasoning to move between theory and data. Students will focus on reasoning about the plausibility of theories of cognition in light of behavioral data.

Additional Requirements and/or Comments: The course is intended for prospective psychology majors (Column 1 breadth course), neuroscience and behavior majors (advanced course), and students with related interests (e.g., artificial intelligence, philosophy of mind).
Students not admitted to the class during preregistration and adjustment will be admitted on the first day of class only if seats become available. In this case, priority will be given to individuals on the enrollment request list who are PSYC/NS&B majors and/or have previously unsuccessfully requested the course. Because there is often a long enrollment request list (100+), do not email the instructor directly, as he/she will not be able to respond. |
