This course offers a broad introduction to scientific theory and research in the study of human mental processes. Topics include perception, attention, memory, thinking, and language. The course draws on both behavioral and cognitive neuroscience approaches and emphasizes the relationship between mind and brain. Class activities include lectures, short discussions, and demonstrations. |
Essential Capabilities:
Logical Reasoning The essence of the scientific method involves use of both deductive and inductive reasoning to move between theory and data. Students will focus on reasoning about the plausibility of theories of cognition in light of behavioral and neuroscience evidence.

Examinations and Assignments: Three in-class examinations (70% multiple choice and 30% short answer) and final paper. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments: The course is intended for prospective psychology majors, neuroscience and behavior majors, and students with related interests (e.g., artificial intelligence, philosophy of mind). This is a column 1 Breadth Requirement course for PSYC major and an elective for NSB major.
Students not admitted during preregistration will be admitted at first class only if seats become available. Priority will go to students on the enrollment request list who previously unsuccessfully requested the course and/or PSYC/NSB majors.
