Certificates: Civic Engagement |
Course Cluster: Health Studies |
This course will provide you with an overview of psychopathology, the study of "abnormal" behavior or mental disorders. From various theoretical perspectives, we will consider how abnormality is defined, and you will learn what we know (and don't know) about the phenomenology, diagnosis, and causes of mental disorders. Major domains of psychopathology, the symptoms and behaviors of common mental disorders, and the mechanisms hypothesized to be involved with them will be covered. Various treatment paradigms will be examined. This course is not designed to help you resolve personal issues or experiences with mental illness. This class will challenge widely accepted ideas about mental illness, and it will help you to become critical thinkers about mental illness. |
