Through essays, novels, videos, and film, we will explore the intersection of culture, ideology, and psychology. We will examine how gender, ethnicity, and class are interwoven in the social fabric and individual identity. Employing feminist, psychoanalytic, and deconstructive interpretive methods, we will try to decipher the many ways we inscribe ourselves in culture. |

Culture profoundly shapes our thoughts, feelings, values, behaviors, perceptions, and above all how we relate to others and larger groups, yet we only typically become aware of culture when interacting with people of different cultural origins from our own. This course first seeks to explore how humans became a uniquely cultural species, examining the pivotal role of culture in human evolution. Secondly, this course will examine some of the primary ways that human cultures have become differentiated, and explore the implications of these cultural differences for the conduct of everyday life. Finally, this course will consider the manifold relations between culture and power, examining how power is differentially distributed both between cultures and within cultures through different cultural groups. |
