This course is designed to introduce the student to the clinical practice and science of human neuropsychology. We will critically evaluate accumulated empirical evidence (based on neuroimaging, electrophysiological and neuropsychological methods) on the relationship of activation of specific brain regions and circuits to complex cognition, behavior and emotion in both health and disease. The class will begin with an introductory overview of regional neuroanatomy, followed by an analysis of approaches to clinical assessment of brain-behavior relationships (history, rationale, goals and procedures). These topics will provide a foundation for the discussion of more specific topics in neuropsychology that will focus on clinical presentation and treatment of a variety of neuropsychiatric disorders (e.g., traumatic brain injury, dementia, attention-deficit disorder, schizophrenia and bipolar illness). Novel approaches to neuropsychiatric rehabilitation will also be discussed. |
