This seminar offers a social psychological analysis of different forms of prejudice and discrimination, including racism, sexism, anti-Semitism, heterosexism, and less recognized forms of bias, such as the exploitation and domination of indigenous peoples, animals, and the natural environment. During the first part of the course, students will read about and discuss specific forms of prejudice. In the second half, they will write a final paper and give a brief presentation on a prejudice-related topic. |

Writing:
Students will write several short papers and one long one, and will receive detailed feedback throughout the semester on writing style as well as topical content.
Ethical Reasoning:
Students will consider ethical as well as psychological dimensions of prejudice, privilege, and discrimination.

Major Readings: Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore
Within psychology, most readings will be drawn from the primary research literature. Outside psychology, students will read several book excerpts, magazine articles, and press clippings. The readings will be chosen so as to represent a variety of disciplines, research methods, and philosophical perspectives.

Examinations and Assignments:
Students will be graded on class participation, quarterly journal entries, a final paper, and a presentation to the class. |

Social Psychology (PSYC260) is a firm prerequisite. This course is in the study area of Social Psychology. |
