This course will survey the origin, philosophies and practices of Buddhism in the cultural contexts of India, Tibet, and Southeast Asia through a close reading of key primary texts and using audiovisual tools and Internet sources to explore contemporary realities. Readings and lectures will be grounded on an on-going exploration of the dynamic links between philosophy and practice, including the relationship between Buddhist thought and social responsibility. In so doing, we will look closely at the transformation of Buddhist thought and practice as it moves through different historical and cultural contexts -- including your own. |
