Majors Colloquium in Religious Studies
RELI 398
Spring 2021
| Section:
01
|
This seminar provides an opportunity for majors to reflect critically upon the theories, methods, and discourses that constitute the academic study of religion. We will be concerned with current studies in history and the history of religions, the interpretation of texts, ethnographic and cultural studies, and feminist theory. Our task is to understand and assess how scholars of religion make critical judgments. The seminar will explore how scholars operate within disciplinary communities, choose their topics, engage interlocutors, and weigh issues of emic and etic interpretation. We will seek to identify and evaluate each scholar's principles of selection, means of description, stipulation of evidence, use of comparative categories, and methods and models of argumentation. |
