Intermediate Russian II

RUSS 202
Spring 2011
Section: 01
Certificates: International Relations

Exercises in class and in the language lab develop fluency in speaking and understanding spoken Russian while teaching the rules of Russian grammar. Readings for the course (short works of Russian prose and poetry) will be listened to as well as read.

Essential Capabilities: Intercultural Literacy
Students' reading and grammar drills are based on texts whose content concerns contemporary Russian life and its cultural specificity. In grammar, Russia's verbal aspect system overlaps, but often does not equate, with English tenses or English conceptions of action. Verbs of motion in Russian boggle the minds of English speakers. Experience of time and space in Russian depend upon spatial concepts intrinsic to the Russian case system. In semantics, there are relatively few cognates with English. Russian history is reflected in Russian etymology (Church Slavic vs. Russian roots; French influences appear in the 19th century, and English influences in the late 20th century).
