The first half of the course reads WAR AND PEACE as a synthesis of narrative models developed by Tolstoy in his earlier writings and as dialogue with other political, philosophical, and literary voices of the 1860's (including Turgenev's and Dostoevsky's). The second half of the course (beginning with ANNA KARENINA and ending with HADZHI MURAD) studies the divergence between Tolstoy-the-thinker and Tolstoy-the-writer in the period 1870-1910. |
