This course is an introduction to the major components of sociological analysis: the language of sociological inquiry, research techniques and methodology, types of explanation, and the relationship between theory and research. |
Essential Capabilities:
Logical Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning We will study how careful attention to issues of causality, measurement validity, and generalizability can help improve sociological analysis. In addition, we will learn basic descriptive and inferential statistics. Last, we will learn how to use qualitative data to critique and develop theories.

We will make extensive use of the Sage series on qualitative and quantitative methods and the following text: Schutt, Russell, INVESTIGATING THE SOCIAL WORLD: THE PROCESS AND PRACTICE OF RESEARCH, 2006 We will also examine the methods used in a select number of key qualitative and quantitative works of sociology: 1.Numerous articles from the American Sociological Review 2.Edin Kathryn and Maria Kefalas. 2005. PROMISES I CAN KEEP: WHY POOR WOMEN PUT MOTHERHOOD BEFORE MARRIAGE. 3.Lareau, Annette. 2000. HOME ADVANTAGE: SOCIAL CLASS AND PARENTAL INTERVENTION IN ELEMENTARY EDUCATION. 4.Lutz, Catherine and Jane Collins. 1993. READING NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC.

Examinations and Assignments: The assignments will consist of three papers: a research proposal, a quantitative research paper and a qualitative research paper. In addition there will be numerous small exercises. |
