In many ways the political actions of the 1960s, world-wide, were as much a failure as a success. Most agree that social and global structures changed then. Few agree whether the changes were for the better or the worse. Still, there are lessons to be learned from an era that has been called "revolutionary." This seminar will study the history of the 1960s in order to rethink the theory and practice of political action directed toward progressive social change in the 2000s. |

Plus various secondary texts describing the global and domestic political situation in the 1960s.

Examinations and Assignments: The major assignment will be to devise and write a "Port Huron Statement" for the 2000s. Also: group projects, weekly writing, and discussion. The class should not be taken by anyone not interested in political action and ready to be engaged in serious study of the past for the purpose of rethinking the future. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments: Participation, therefore, attendance is required, along with reader and writing (of which a good bit). |
