Close study of texts from the Colonial period to the present will serve as the basis for a discussion of some of the major writers and intellectuals in Latin America: Las Casas, Sor Juana, Bolívar, Sarmiento, Martí, Rodó, Mariátegui, Vallejo, Neruda, Borges, Carpentier, Fuentes, Castellanos, Paz, the subcomandante Marcos, and Bolaño. Special emphasis will be placed on issues related to culture and politics. For purposes of understanding context, students will also read selected chapters from works by historians and cultural critics and will see several films, including "Yo, la peor de todas," "Camila," "Rojo amanecer," "A Place Called Chiapas," and "La batalla de Chile."
