A close study of texts from the colonial period to the present will serve as the basis for a discussion of some of the major writers and intellectuals in Latin America: Las Casas, Sor Juana, Bolívar, Sarmiento, Martí, Rodó, Mariátegui, Vallejo, Neruda, Borges, García Márquez, Castellanos, Paz, the subcomandante Marcos, and Bolaño. Special emphasis will be placed on issues related to culture and politics. For purposes of understanding context, students will also read selected chapters from works by historians and cultural critics and will see several films, including YO, LA PEOR DE TODAS, CAMILA, ROJO AMANECER, A PLACE CALLED CHIAPAS, and LA BATALLA DE CHILE. |

Essential Capabilities:
Interpretation, Writing
Through close reading of recent Latin American novels and discussion of cultural issues, students will have the opportunity to focus on the manner in which they interpret texts and build arguments. The four required papers, spread out over the semester, will permit students to hone their writing skills in Spanish. Since it is expected that students will participate in classroom discussion, they will also have the opportunity to practice their spoken Spanish.

SPAN226 is intended for students who have completed SPAN221 with a B or better. Students who have not done so should consult with the professor before pre-registering. Readings, class discussion, and written work in Spanish only. Pre-registered students whose Spanish proficiency is insufficient will be asked to withdraw. Spanish 221 or its equivalent are expected. Students cannot take this course CR/U. |
