The World of Federico García Lorca: Tradition and Modernity in the Spanish Avant-Garde

Our focus will be the Spanish avant-garde as mirrored in the poetry and plays of Federico García Lorca, one of Europe's most celebrated authors. A substantial portion of the syllabus includes the poetry and plays of writers who represent the literary traditions (classical, medieval, Golden Age) and contemporary intellectual context (1900-1936) that influenced Lorca. These readings will help us to understand how the modern and the popular interact in the literature and visual arts (Picasso, Dalí, Buñuel) of this period of intense intellectual ferment. Since intellectual and ideological ferment run parallel during these years, we will also study the relationship between the arts and ideology, concentrating on the portrayal of Lorca as a modern bard--his theories of the "people's playwright" and the activities of his wandering theater troupe LA BARRACA--in the context of the Second Republic (1931-1939), Spain's first important experiment with a progressive democracy. |

Essential Capabilities:
Intercultural Literacy, Interpretation
INTERPRETATION: Students will be challenged daily to exercise and assess their tools for interpreting both literary (poetry, plays) and visual (art, performance) modes of expression.
INTERCULTURAL LITERACY: Students will be encouraged to deepen their understanding of the unique ways in which Spanish writers and artists confront 20th century modernism with working within their own cultural paradigms and national tradition.

- A small selection of plays and poetry from Ancient Greece and Rome, Medieval and Golden Age Spain (Miguel de Cervantes, Pedro Calderón de la Barca)

Examinations and Assignments:
Assessment is based on:
- Various short (1 page) response papers and oral assignments
- Three short papers (3 - 5 pages)
- A term paper (10 pages)
- An oral final exam
Assignments include audiovisual material accessible over the streaming server or in the computer labs. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments:
SPAN 254 is intended for students who have completed Spanish 221 or the equivalent with a grade of B or better. Students who have not done so should consult with the professor before pre-registering.
In addition to the essential capabilities indicated, students will regularly exercise skills WRITING and SPEAKING IN SPANISH.
