Spring 2021
| Section:

|
This course may be repeated for credit. |
This studio course will explore the fundamentals of acting and how they are applicable to all areas of life, regardless of vocation. A wide range of exercises will be used to develop relaxation, concentration, and the imagination, and to free the body and voice of tension. Students will examine the creative process practically and theoretically, through exercises including games, improvisation, monologues, and scene work. Emphasis will be placed on building confidence, cultivating each artist's individual voice, and approaching the work with a deep sense of curiosity, generosity, joy, and serious play.

Additional Requirements and/or Comments:
Theater Majors will be given priority as well as sophomores, however all are welcome to apply. Prior acting experience is not required, however a willingness to dive fearlessly into all the class exercises and performances is expected. Interested students should request enrollment during the pre-registration period by 5p Monday November 9, individual conferences will be held remotely on Wednesday November 11. This class will require supplementary viewings of performances and artist conversations outside of class times. In addition, rehearsal outside of class in preparation for class performances is required.
The Theater Department organizes a variety of performances for students enrolled in its courses. Field trips to see performances off campus are integrated into course syllabi. Instructors will notify students of all dates at the beginning of the semester and costs for all course field trips are covered (specifically, transportation to and from the performance and tickets). Any potential scheduling conflicts for field trips should be discussed with faculty members. Once students indicate that they are going and tickets are purchased, it is assumed they will attend. (Students backing out of field trips they had said they would attend will be asked to cover the cost of their ticket.) Performances of visitors to Wesleyan's Center for the Arts are integrated into course syllabi and students are required to attend these performances unless otherwise negotiated with instructors. Tickets for performances are available to students at the Box Office in Usdan at the reduced price of $6.00. |
