Introduction to Directing

In this basic experimental studio course, students investigate the role and work of a director. Through practice and discourse, topics to be considered include the director's analysis of text, research, working with actors, blocking, rehearsal procedures, and directorial style. |

Examinations and Assignments:
Exercises and scenes to be rehearsed outside the class and presented in class. 2-3 short papers. Final project. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments:
This class is a requirement for students who wish to direct for credit or with Theater Department sponsorship. Preference will be given to theater majors. Admission to studio, performance, project and tutorial courses in theater is at the discretion of individual instructors, who take into account estimated talent, experience and the need to form balanced and effective working ensembles. If you are interested in the class, please request POI and send an e-mail to dalger@wesleyan.edu with answers to the following questions:
1. The summary of your previous theater experience, including both pre-Wesleyan and Wesleyan theater work.
2. What in your theater/non-theater experience, in your opinion, prepares you for taking a directing class?
3. What do you expect from the class and what do you hope to learn?
4. In the future, are you planning to take Directing II and are you considering an Honors Thesis in Directing?
For best consideration, please send your application by April 10, 2020. In some cases, you may be contacted for additional information and/or to schedule an interview. However, if an interview is not requested, it does not mean that you are not considered for the class.
The Theater Department organizes a variety of performances for students enrolled in its courses. Field trips to see performances off campus are integrated into course syllabi. Instructors will notify students of all dates at the beginning of the semester and costs for all course field trips are covered (specifically, transportation to and from the performance and tickets). Any potential scheduling conflicts for field trips should be discussed with faculty members. Once students indicate that they are going and tickets are purchased, it is assumed they will attend. (Students backing out of field trips they had said they would attend will be asked to cover the cost of their ticket.) Performances of visitors to Wesleyan's Center for the Arts are integrated into course syllabi and students are required to attend these performances unless otherwise negotiated with instructors. Tickets for performances are available to students at the Box Office in Usdan at the reduced price of $6.00. |
