In the first half of the semester, we will examine archaeology from its origins as an interest in ancient material culture, through its establishment as an academic discipline, to its current multidisciplinary sophistication. In the second half of the course, we will concentrate on developments in the last 30 years. The focus will be on how archaeologists think about the past and how they (re)construct representations of it, tracing developments in method, theory, and ethics.
