This course is a close reading of Plato's REPUBLIC, one of the most influential and controversial texts in the Western philosophical tradition. The REPUBLIC's concerns are extremely broad--ethics, politics, metaphysics, education, rhetoric, and the nature of philosophy itself. We will explore how each of these topics is understood in the dialogue, but also how they are related to one another. It is always with an eye to this larger question of what it is that unites the REPUBLIC that we shall work our way through this complex text. |
