Learn how short stories build from the idea you had into living, breathing fiction in this dynamic real-time writing workshop on StoryMOO, where you'll turn in a short story every two weeks and get preliminary feedback in classmates' notes posted before the workshop meets for the lively online discussion. Class meets online in this electronic community created specially for the course. Discuss your stories with other writers in this special virtual space, with weekly workshops and regular one-on-one conferences with novelist Kit Reed, the instructor. In this user-friendly, text-based environment, anything is possible and nobody cares if you have a bad hair day, because you are what you type-- and people know you by how well you can write. You'll read my weekly essay on writing techniques: dialog, use of detail and other major aspects of fiction writing. In addition to reading and discussing others' work online, you'll be expected to read their work and post critiques to a class mailing list on StoryMOO every week, before we meet for the group discussion. In conference we'll talk about what you're reading not-for-school and I'll make recommendations. You're encouraged to read as many short stories as you can get your hands on.

Examinations and Assignments:
After a preliminary assignment, you'll write a short story of no less than 8-10 pages every other week, turned in on an absolute deadline schedule. Real-time workshop discussions will center on your work. You're expected to prepare and post careful notes on each week's stories before the weekly group meeting. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments:
Online interviews for this course must be scheduled *before* the computers open for April pre-registration. Email storyfirst@wesleyan.edu for an appointment for an online interview. Include a sample of your fiction.
Instructor permission on the basis of a short email about why you want the class - and, more important, a sample of your fiction. Electronic submissions only. Email essay and sample to: storyfirst@wesleyan.edu before preregistration begins.
