This advanced course focuses on the German literary and cultural developments after Germany's defeat in 1945. The process of reconstruction and of "coming to terms with the past" or Vergangenheitsbewaeltigung will be examined through literary and non-literary texts and films from the two Germanys, Austria, and Switzerland.
