This course critically examines the philosophical treatment of meaning, interpretation, subjectivity, language, and history within the tradition that extends from Husserl's program of phenomenology, through Heidegger's and Merleau-Ponty's criticisms and existential revisions of phenomenology, to the antiphenomenological projects of Foucault and Derrida. |

The readings for this course are difficult, and the issues they raise are philosophically sophisticated. The official prerequisite for this course is any one prior course in philosophy, but either Phil 202 or a course in the "Mind and Reality" area of the curriculum is especially useful. Students with significant background in literary or social theory may request a prerequisite override. |
