This course examines the various meansings of masculinities in 20th century Chinese communities, including Hong Kong, Taiwan, mainland China, and "the Chinese diaspora." The masculinities in the course are understood not only in relation to femininities but also in relation to the masculinities in other cultures. The course studies five films and four books of fiction (short stories and a novel), which represent diverse historic periods (ranging from early 20th century modernization to late 20th-century globalization) and regional backgrounds. |
