This course examines the various meanings of masculinities in twentieth-century Chinese communities, including Hong Kong, Taiwan, mainland China, and "the Chinese diaspora." The masculinities in the course are understood not only in relation to femininities but also in relation to the masculinities in other cultures. The course studies five films and four books of fiction (short stories and a novel), which represent diverse historic periods (ranging from early twentieth-century modernization to late twentieth-century globalization) and regional backgrounds. |
