This course will study the Spanish Civil War through some of its representations in narrative and film. If the Spanish Civil War pitted Spaniard against Spaniard in the fight over fascism, it was also international, serving Hitler as a battleground on which to experiment with new military weaponry as well as a site on which to confront and defeat him. The course will focus on the representation of this historical event through novels and short stories dating from the end of the war to the present. Some in-class time will be devoted to the depiction of the war in a number of famous films and documentaries. Special attention will be given to the many different approaches taken by writers and artists over time and, in particular, to changes in perception that have occurred as a result of Spain's transition to democracy in 1975. |
Essential Capabilities:
Intercultural Literacy, Interpretation The course stresses the importance of INTERPRETATION of texts on the Spanish civil war to the acquisition of knowledge and understanding of Spanish culture and history. Since the theories of myth and trauma inform this course, students engage in a critical and practical way with these analytical tools. Also, since these are competing interpretations on the legacy of the Spanish civil war, students are encouraged to explore these theories together with their own interpretive skills. The course includes training in effective presentation of interpretations especially in writing.
Students are taught how to develop INTERCULTURAL LITERACY through the critical reflection on what constitutes Spanish culture. The study of the past or historical memory through literary and film narratives is a key component of the course.
