Small-group performance skills including improvisation, accompaniment, pacing, interaction, repertoire, and arrangements. |
Essential Capabilities:
Designing, Creating, and Realizing, Interpretation Designing, creating, and realizing: The course teaches students primarily to perform, but also to discuss and analyze this specific music. Emphasis will be on the original design and presentation of certain genres and styles. A concert at the end of the semester will be part of the assignments.
Intercultural Literacy: By studying music from different nationality, ethnic group, or historical period, students will gain knowledge of cross-cultural encounter; hence promoting a comparative reflection.

Additional Requirements and/or Comments: Music reading is necessary. Undergraduates may take this course up to two times for a letter grade and up to four times for credit towards graduation.
Audition requirements: Be prepared to play (and preferably bring a chart for) a medium or up-tempo bebop tune or standard. Interpret melody and demonstrate ability to improvise over the chord changes. Rhythm section players should also demonstrate instrument appropriate accompaniment skills on the same tune (comping for guitar and piano, walking lines for bass, etc.). Jazz-relevant sight-reading will also be expected. Auditions will be held in Rehearsal Hall 001 from 5-8 pm on Thursday, January 20. There will be a sign-up sheet in the lobby of the Music Building. |
