Examinations and Assignments:
Grading will be based primarily on the consistency and thoroughness with which students practice the assigned materials. There will be 1-2 required performances during the semester. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments:
Music reading is necessary. Undergraduates may take this course up to two times for a letter grade and up to four times for credit towards graduation.
All players of wind instruments will be expected to have appropriate PPE (e.g. nylon bell covers) for their instruments. Please contact the instructor if you have questions about this. Students will work to develop fluency and stylistically authentic phrasing and rhythm within the traditions under the broad umbrella of straight-ahead jazz exemplified by such artists as Mary Lou Williams, Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, Art Blakey, John Coltrane, Sarah Vaughan, Miles Davis, Ornette Coleman, and others.
Auditions are required (sign-up at the link below): Tuesday, September 6, 2022 5:00-8:00 pm Adzenyah Rehearsal Hall
Audition sign-up sheets are available here: https://www.wesleyan.edu/music/ensembles/Ensemble%20Audition%20Sign-up%20Sheets.html
Audition Requirements: Be prepared to play a medium or up-tempo bebop tune or standard. Interpret melody and demonstrate ability to improvise over the chord changes (or, in the case of drums, the form). Rhythm section players should also demonstrate instrument-appropriate accompaniment skills on the same tune (comping for guitar and piano, walking lines for bass, ability to use sticks and brushes for drums, etc.). Jazz-relevant sight-reading (melody and/or chords and improvisation) will also be expected. Please email Prof. Baerman if you have any questions about the audition, including but not limited to the appropriateness of your prepared piece.
