Crosslisting:
PHYS 558 |
Course Cluster and Certificates: Integrated Design, Engineering & Applied Science Minor |
This course is an introduction to condensed-matter physics, including crystalline and amorphous solids, liquids, polymers, and other soft materials. We will explore structure, thermodynamics, phase transitions, dynamics, and mechanical properties of materials. We will discuss the experimental methods used to probe material properties and consider simplified theoretical models that elucidate the shared properties of materials. Problem sets will include significant numerical work, since many of the systems we explore are not readily solved by analytic means. |
