The two main styles of drama, northern and southern, will be analyzed with reference to each other, to their borrowings from fiction, and to historical change. The gender implications of this material will also be explored. As we near the end of the course we will take a look at Peking opera and its impact on western theater. Finally, we will sample a few modern Chinese dramas that look back to premodern times. |
