This is a seminar on comparative narrative and stylistic analysis that focuses on contemporary films from Hong Kong, Taiwan, China, South Korea, and Japan, regions that have produced some of the most exciting commercial and art cinema in the last 30 years. We will begin by examining the basic narrative and stylistic principles at work in the films, then broaden the scope of our inquiry to compare the aesthetics of individual directors. The films of Wong Kar-wai, Tsai Ming-liang, Hou Hsiao-hsien, Kitano Takeshi, Kore-eda Hirokazu, Bong Joon-ho, Wang Xiaoshuai, Tian Zhuangzhuang, Johnnie To, Stephen Chiau, Hong Sang-soo, Tsui Hark, Lu Chuan, and others will be featured. |

Examinations and Assignments: Assessment will be based on participation in discussion, a group presentation, and three papers (the first two 7-8pp., the last 18-20pp.). |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments: Additional required screenings will be held on Tuesday evenings from 7-9pm. Attendance at all screenings and classes is mandatory. Students interested in the course should contact the professor ASAP during browsing period or earlier. |
