A course in short or shortish fiction for people who have already had an introduction to fictional technique, and preferably an additional course in creative writing. Students will generate their own writing projects, and readings will be tailored to the interests of the class. Heavy workshop component: students will make copies of their own work and distribute them to the class at least a week in advance of its being discussed. |

Major Readings: Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore
The class will read and discuss three stories by each student, as well as a steady diet of stories by published authors.

Examinations and Assignments: Students will write two or three or four short stories, for a total of 10,000 to 12,000 words, as well as a non-cosmetic revision of one of the stories; there will be regular exercises, journal assignments, and a final portfolio of all written work. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments: No later than Friday, November 10, 2006, applicants to this course must drop off with the English department administrator a five-page, double-spaced sample of their fiction as well as a cover page with their name, year, major, and a brief summary of previous writing experience: this will constitute an application to the course. Instructor will notify all applicants by email in time for registration. Students may not take this course and another writing course concurrently, with the exception of a senior thesis tutorial. Students who might wish to write an honors thesis in English are advised to take this course for a letter grade. The prerequisite to writing an honors thesis is an A- average for all English classes and the prerequisite for a creative honors thesis, additionally, is an A in two writing courses. |
